Pickering Master Splashers Executive

The 2014/15 Season starts on Tuesday September 16, 2014. For our first night there will be a sign up and information session in the meeting room, downstairs at the Dunbarton pool starting at 8:15 pm followed by our first pool session at 9:00 pm. During the information session you will have a chance to meet the coaches and executive and discuss plans for the upcoming season.

Please remember you will still have to download and sign the waiver and bring it to your first swim. Or if it is more convenient, there should be copies with the coach or executive member.

On the coaching front, we are excited to welcome back Rene St. Aubin and Allison McGhee. Both did a great job last year and we will be looking for the same this season.

The 15^th FINA World Masters Championships were held in Montreal from July 27^th until August 10^th. Pickering Master Splashers sent 8 swimmers to compete against almost 6000 athletes from around the world. Nikki Minchin, Ursula Wolfel, Gerhard Wolfel, Greg Bordash, Paul Gemmink, Iain Johnston, Glen Hanna, and Andy Manahan represented PMS at the meet. The team was involved in about 20 individual races. Andy Manahan captured 15^th place in the 100m Butterfly, while Iain Johnston, Ursula Wolfel, and Glen Hanna had some top 30 results. Greg Bordash was competing in only the third meet of his life.The men’s 4X50m freestyle relay team placed 38^th with a time of 1:59.51. The medley relay was so fast, no time could be recorded.The team did not let swimming get in their way of enjoying the sites, foods, and shopping in Montreal.

PartyPeter Chauvin will be hosting an end of year party on June 21st.

This year,  instead of finishing our swim season at the end of May,  normal  swim times will be extended  into June until Thursday June 19, 2014. After this,
the last swim of the 2013/14 season will be Monday June 23, 2014 with no swim on Saturday June 21, 2014.

Note: Many swimmers continue swimming at the Pickering Complex Mon/Tues/Thurs 9 -10 pm during adult lane swim.
Although this is not part of the normal PMS schedule and as such is not coached or paid for by the club,
a work out is often available.

Big congratulations to Canada’s Women’s Hockey team member, and Pickering resident, Jennifer Wakefield, for winning GOLD in Sochi and big congrats to proud parents and PMS members Suzanne and Tim Wakefield.

Pickering Master Splashers Executive

Omni Swim Aquatic Supplies will be at the Pickering Rec Centre this week-end. Unfortunately, they will not be giving the 20% discount you get when you go to the store in Scarborough since they pay part of their proceeds to the kids swim club. However, polyester swim suits will be 25% off this week-end. There will also be discounts on back-packs (a few of us have them if you would like to see one – Paul should be there this Thursday). There will also be some other discounts. Omni usually leaves around 2:00 or so at the latest. It would therefore be best to go in the mornings.

The first swim meet of the 2013-2014 swim season our club is planning on attending will be the Clarington NO EXCUSES meet scheduled for Saturday, November 30, 2013.  The meet package can be accessed at:

A good group of us went last year and a lot of fun was had by everyone that went.  Some of us even swam well.

The Clarington people were really nice to us and seemed to enjoy having us there.  We were asked at some of the swim meets later that year if we would be coming back.

As everyone knows, there is no pressure in coming to a meet.  All of us cheer each other on.  After all, you are only swimming against and for yourself.
